Purpose and Ground Rules

"What are you doing here?"

Not you, me. That is the question I asked myself as the set up process was well underway. I have no presence on any of the social media platforms and cast no judgement against those who do. My stints with several of the more popular ones were limited, with the majority of my posts focused on food and travel. This is something different. My intention here is to create an electronic filing cabinet filled with writings on a wide range of content. The primary purpose is to share time-stamped logs of information with my two daughters with the hope that they will learn from my experiences (and mistakes) along their own journey of life. Secondly, this will become a journal of sorts for me and something I can refer back to down the road.

"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."

- Socrates

I am not the authority on any subject. However, I have made it a personal habit to learn as much as possible studying the triumphs and failures of individuals, institutions, and societies. My personal hero, Charlie Munger, Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has made it his mission to engage in a lifetime of continuous learning. Charlie is 95 years young, still attends the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting and reads himself to sleep every night. To provide you with some additional color, here is a link to a post that dives deeper into how Charlie thinks: https://fs.blog/2016/04/munger-operating-system/ Charlie talks a lot about the concept of inverting a problem first to best solve it, which means exploring and removing the negative possible outcomes at the outset. I'll give it a whirl.....

What you WILL NOT find in future writings:

1 - Politically charged statements - I'll leave that to the news

2 - The real names of people in my life - protecting privacy is paramount

3 - Hateful language - there's plenty of that in the world already

4 - War and Peace length posts - nobody has time for that

5 - Direct advice - the self-help space is completely saturated and I can only share about what has been useful to ME

6 - Machismo - after all, the name of the site is "Humbly Yours"

7 - Off-color or vulgar content - my wife and two daughters are my first subscribers. Nuff said!

What you MAY find in future writings:

1 - Takeaways, excerpts and quotes from books I find insightful

2 - Funny stories worth sharing, including lessons learned when they apply

3 - Research on miscellaneous topics - could be helpful or incredibly boring depending on interest levels (my dream jobs include: archaeologist, historian, librarian, sociologist and forensic scientist)

4 - Shared Gratitude - a great friend got me into the habit of keeping a gratitude journal. It is important to me and I capitalized it for this reason

5 - Interesting facts backed by sources and/or supporting empirical evidence

Who cares? See primary and secondary purpose above. My friends and family have taught me so much over the years, something for which I am eternally grateful. This is me returning the favor. My wife was perplexed when she found out about the new site and asked "Are you a blogger now?" Then she remarked "You should be a 'Vlogger' - that is more 2019." Truthfully, I did not know it meant "video logger" until I looked it up. Rest assured, there will be no "Vlogs" posted. Reading and writing are two of my passions, therefore I will be keeping it old school. Going viral is not in the cards.

I hope you enjoy the future posts and, hey, maybe we will learn a few new things together. Thanks for reading.

Humbly yours,

W.
